Media freedom and democracy: The role of media capture for authoritarian agendas @ Sala Belvedere, Villa Schifanoia

This seminar, organised in the context of the EUI Widening Europe Programme, will explore the state of the media and its vital role in democratic state-building.

The event will analyse the critical relationship between media freedom and democratic resilience, with a particular focus on Europe. Flora Garamvolgyi and Matteo Trevisan will present research on the state of the media and its vital role in democratic state-building, exploring how media control can serve as a tool for authoritarian consolidation. Speakers will build on the case of Hungary with the benefit of hands-on journalistic experiences in the democratic backsliding country, offering insights into how its leadership successfully curtailed media independence to solidify power.

The discussion will draw lessons for safeguarding against similar authoritarian tactics in other European democracies, exploring strategies for “dictatorproofing” fragile political systems and reinforcing democratic norms across the continent. This initiative is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme.
