Join Elda Brogi in the third 2023 Conversations for the Future of Europe
The support of media pluralism and quality in the algorithmic society requires first of all measures that support the sustainability of the media industry. One option would be to earmark revenues, at EU level, from the prospective global minimum tax on digital sector multinationals and use them to boost the number of quality news offerings and to support journalism initiatives. These initiatives could be supported directly by providing media outlets on public and current affairs with subsidies, but also indirectly, for example by distributing vouchers to citizens or tax credits for media companies. The support of media pluralism also requires measures that facilitate the exposure of citizens to diverse sources of information. An EU Fund for Pluralism should be set up in order to incentivise the implementation of public service recommender systems that do not rely on personal user data or targeted advertising.
The Conversations for the Future of Europe is a series of events tackling major EU challenges taking place from April to May 2023.
