EMFA in focus: towards a common regulatory framework to foster media pluralism? @ Theatre, Badia Fiesolana

This seminar will bring together legal experts to examine how effectively the European Media Freedom Act delivers on its pledge to strengthen media pluralism and independence within the EU.

The European Media Freedom Act represents an unprecedented piece of EU legislation that seeks to strengthen pluralism and independence of the media within the European Union. Amongst other things, the Act aims to prevent political interference in editorial decisions; ensure transparency of media ownership; protect journalists by safeguarding their sources and prohibiting the use of spyware against them; defend online media content from unjustified removal; establish a new European board for media services; and finally, set standards for audience measurement systems and promote the transparent allocation of state advertising.

Following months of negotiations, in January 2024, the trilogue compromise text was approved by the Permanent Representatives’ Committee and confirmed by a vote in the Committee on Culture and Education. On 13 March, the European Parliament voted on the agreement. On 26 March, EMFA has received its final approval by the Council. This seminar to discuss it welcomes anyone interested in media pluralism and freedom of expression, including academics, journalists, media professionals, policymakers, and civil society representatives.
