The Special Issue “EMFA Under the Spotlight: Towards a Common Regulatory Framework to Foster Media Pluralism?” is now available
The Italian journal Rivista italiana di informatica e diritto is publishing on a rolling basis articles analysing the European Media Freedom Act and collecting them in a monographic section edited by Prof. Elda Brogi, titled “EMFA Under the Spotlight: Towards a Common Regulatory Framework to Foster Media Pluralism?“. This Special Issue emerges from a seminar organised last April by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the European University Institute; the seminar convened legal experts with the aim to assess the effectiveness of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) in fulfilling its commitment to enhance media pluralism and independence across the European Union.
Currently published articles include Enrico Albanesi‘s assessment of safeguards for the independent functioning of public service media providers and Matteo Monti‘s analysis of the provisions of Articles 18 and 19 of the EMFA in relation to the Digital Services Act.
Over the upcoming weeks, many of the contributions from this Special Issue will be summarised and revisited via the Observatory on the European Media Freedom Act, a project of the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF) which offers readers clear and accessible insights into the new European Media Freedom Act, aiming to encourage ongoing discussions on its implementation. New posts will be published every Friday.

About the Observatory on the EMFA
The Observatory on the European Media Freedom Act is a project managed by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF), serving as a hub of expertise on the new EU European Media Freedom Act Regulation (EMFA). The Observatory provides independent scholarly analysis and facilitates discussions regarding this crucial legislation, its implementation, and enforcement. Established in 2022, the Observatory closely monitors the legislative process of the EMFA, engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders and cultivating a comprehensive network of media regulation experts from academia, civil society, industry, and governmental bodies. By providing detailed accounts of the debates among media professionals and experts, the Observatory offers valuable perspectives to the ongoing implementation process.
The project generates regular analyses on the EMFA and related developments through various formats, including policy reports, academic articles, blog posts, and hosts events such as expert workshops, panel discussions, and conferences. These activities aim to foster informed discourse and collaborative solutions to enhance the effectiveness of media regulation within the European Union.
