On 16 October 2017, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered in a car bomb attack outside her home.
Following her death, the editors of some of Europe and the world’s biggest newspapers penned a letter to the European Commission requesting that the EU use their power to see that a full and proper investigation is carried out in order to send a clear message of support to journalists working around the world. The editors’ letter makes reference to the CMPF’s 2016 Media Pluralism Monitor, which found that Malta suffers from a lack of editorial autonomy and extensive ownership of the media by political parties.
