About us

Advancing research on media pluralism and media policy

Media pluralism and press freedom are the backbone of democratic societies. Without them, citizens cannot make informed, meaningful choices. But press freedom is not self-sustaining – it requires constant vigilance and sound policy to uphold it. At the CMPF, we carry out research on the state of the media across Europe and beyond to support evidence-based policymaking, disseminate knowledge, and equip media professionals with the tools, training, and networks needed to strengthen their role in democracy. To safeguard its full independence from political or commercial influence, the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom does not accept funding from national governments or private companies. The Centre is co-funded by the European Union.

What we do

Research

We carry out independent, multi-disciplinary research on media freedom and pluralism in Europe and beyond and to provide knowledge support to the international, European and national policy and rulemaking processes.

Training

Every year, our Summer School for Journalists and Media Practitioners equips media professionals with the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to thrive in a rapidly changing media environment.

Events

We bring together academics, policymakers, journalists, and civil society to discuss the future of media freedom in our talks, webinars, and big gatherings.

Over more than a decade of implementing the Media Pluralism Monitor, we have witnessed the rise of new and complex challenges driven by the digital transformation. Today, the need to support independent journalism and safeguard media pluralism is more urgent than ever. As we prepare to assess the impact of the European Media Freedom Act across Member States, we urge governments to uphold their responsibility to protect press freedom — an essential pillar of our democratic societies.
