The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF), Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in co-operation with the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at the Central European University (Budapest) is running the project “Strengthening Journalism in Europe: Tools, Networking, Training” as part of the ECPMF (European Centre for Press and Media Freedom).
Due to the increasing need to safeguard freedom of expression and freedom of information, as guaranteed by the EU Charter for Fundamental Rights and according to the standards of Council of Europe and OSCE, this project will enhance practical support mechanisms for journalists in Europe in particular with regard to threats, violations of editorial liberty and freedom of speech.
In order to fulfill this goal, the project develops:
- An international network of legal experts from across the EU Member States and beyond to provide support for journalists;
- Tools for Journalists facilitating their understanding of regulatory and legal parameters related to newsgathering, reporting and publishing activities;
- Reports on violations to press freedom;
- Public forums in order to raise the awareness about risks, threats and violations of media freedom and pluralism;
- Cross-border networks between journalists by involving them in training activities;
- Awards for the best initiatives in online investigative journalism.
