The European Commission awarded a grant for the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (500.000 €) to conduct a pilot implementation of the “Media Pluralism Monitor” (MPM). The Centre, acting independently from the Commission and Member States, will update the indicators used in the MPM in the light of the growing importance of the Internet and then will conduct a pilot implementation of the Monitor. This will enable the Commission to obtain a broad understanding of the risks to media pluralism in a sample of nine EU Member States.
The Monitor was developed in 2009, at the request of the European Commission, by the University of Leuven, Central European University, Jönköping International Business School, Ernst & Young Consultancy Belgium and subcontractors in all Member States and defines a set of indicators and a monitoring tool to “measure” the threats to pluralism in the Member States.
